The Arrival
- JUNE/JULY 2020 -
This show provided an opportunity for Middle School students seeking a creative challenge in exploring the art of story-telling through collaboration and self-devised work.
With permission from Shaun Tan himself, this Redfoot Youth Theatre drama event The Arrival took inspiration from the work of this incredible West Australian artist through West Australian stories for West Australian people.
This is a migrant story told as a series of images that might seem to come from a long forgotten time. A man leaves his wife and child in an impoverished town, seeking better prospects in an unknown country on the other side of a vast ocean. Eventually finding himself in a bewildering city of foreign customs, peculiar animals, curious floating objects and indecipherable languages. (http://www.shauntan.net/books/the-arrival.html)
We believe that this story has a familiarity within our performers very own early schooling life. Arriving at a place that is steeped in tradition, foreign customs and the language of the many who have trod the grounds before them. They enter seeking better prospects and leave with a better understanding of themselves.
Due to COVID-19 evening performance audience numbers were limited and were restricted to cast member family and friends with a matinee also taking place for our Year 6 Hale School students.
Under the direction of Natasha Souris, Middle School Redfoot members worked within a ‘found space’ to create divergent, insightful and purposeful experiences.
